A New Chapter…..
I was once told that unless you get out of your comfort zone, you cannot grow. This can be applied to an individual in any aspect of their life, or to an organisation, a team or even a motorcycle group.
The Widow Sons indeed had stepped out of that comfort zone in order to grow and stay loyal to their beliefs and values, not to conform and challenge those beliefs and values but to be steadfast and move forward as one.
We as a Chapter were initially affiliated to the Masonic Bikers Association (MBA) and after moving from the MBA, we have been progressing forward and growing, not only with autonomy but with strength of membership and the joining forces with Caerdydd Lodge and becoming Caerdydd Lodge, Home of the Widows Sons with nine members known as the “First 9”.
Two years ago, we stepped out of that comfort zone again and became members of the Masonic Riders Association (MRA). A stepping stone to where we are today and part of our journey that has made us who we are. This was the correct step at the time – the right move, but we wanted more. We started to believe and desire our own autonomy, our own patches, our own bylaws. To be a Chapter owned by the Chapter, run by the Chapter and Led by the Chapter.
We dared to believe and on that momentous evening in November where our Sgt at Arms donned the collar and jewel of the Worshipful Master and was placed into the Chair of King Solomon, we put that belief into practice.
We signed our Widow’s Sons Masonic Motorcycle Association (MMA) Charter and the bylaws. Our journey has moved forward. The path ahead is clear. The MMA is finally official and every single person, Ladies and Gentlemen from the Patched members should hold their heads high in all the hard work that has been done to get us here. It has been an example of committed hard work and steadfast teamwork. Everyone has played their part.
The day had turned to twilight and the hordes of people were making their ways into Cardiff City Centre. The combined forces of Welsh and New Zealand rugby fans frequenting the many drinking establishments to discuss the possible or obvious outcome of the match the next day.
The revellers, drinkers, stag and hen night groups as well as the people out for a nice meal or a show in the theatre all aiming for the delights of the city.
And then there was one, positive strides and an air of anxiety perhaps. The young mason from Aberdare making that same journey down from the valleys – he would become Worshipful Master by the end of the evening.
He entered the establishment, oozing confidence, perhaps hiding the 1812 Overture being played in his stomach. A beacon of brown hair in an ocean of silver.
Widows Sons members, Lodge members, guests all saw that young mason from Aberdare take the main chair, don the gauntlets of the Worshipful Master. He was presented with the collar and jewel of the office and then handed the gavel.
His bouncing excitement and enthusiasm abounded. What a great achievement. A perfect gentleman and mason to take the helm of Caerdydd Lodge No 3959.
A great evening was had by all. From beginning to the close of the Festive Board. Smiles, happiness, good banter and roaring laughter. What a superb evening.
